The best quote I’ve heard in a while from 82 year old Joe Paterno on Twitter, “You guys have to talk about something.  The fans have to put something on those, what do you guys call those things?  Twittle-do, twittle-dee?”

I Re-Fell in Love With Baseball

Posted in Dave Zangaro with tags , , , , , , , on July 24, 2009 by z889sports

I have always loved baseball.  Maybe because of the history, maybe because of the strategy, maybe because it is the only sport to be had in the best season of the year.  Around this time every year, however, I begin to tire of the game.  I begin to miss Football, Hockey and dare I say it…even basketball.  I guess it’s human nature, too much of anything isn’t good.  Within the last few days, however, three baseball players reminded me of why I love the game.  For that I thank them. Good pitching and timely hitting.  That’s all it takes.  The Phillies did just that last night against the Cubs in a 4-1 game that extended their winning streak to 10 games.

Jason Werth took care of the timely hitting in the bottom of the 13th inning with two outs.  After Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez walked, Werth deposited a 1-1 offering from Cubs relief pitcher Jeff Samardzija into the left field stands.  Before the 13th the only offense for the Phils came from a re-energized Jimmy Rollins when hit took Rich Harden deep.

The game started off as a pitcher’s duel between former Oakland teammates, Rich Harden and Joe Blanton.  They didn’t dissapoint.  Both pitchers went seven innings and allowed only one run each before turning the game over to their bullpens.

The bullpen combination of Ryan Madsen, Brad Lidge, Chan Ho Park and Clay Condrey combined to pitch 6 scoreless innings to secure the win.  With the bullpen pitching lights out it was only a matter of time before one pitch hung up to long and Jason Werth didn’t miss it. Read more »

Surprise! A Message from Overseas!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on July 20, 2009 by z889sports

Hey sports fans…sorry for the technical difficulties on Tuesday night…although I haven’t forgotten how to speak English, apparently Kevin forgot how to get callers on the air…nah, I’m just kidding, Kevin does a fine job.

While I am sure that I am oh so missed by everyone, I am having a good time here in Portugal (Mesopotamia according to Ricky). It’s a little different than home, but all the basic stuff is the same. There’s really only one problem…one major problem…NO LOCAL SPORTS! So I have to rely on www.z889sports.com for all of my local sports updates while I am away.

Although my veins are filled with Port Wine, and my stomach is filled with all sorts of food, I am also training to be the champion on the first annual Sportsapalooza, coming this August. And I WILL WIN!!!

I have some good video that I will post sometime after my return on Saturday (7/25), but I have some photos of the trip that I will post now. Hope you enjoy, be sure to listen to the show tomorrow night, LIVE from Burlington Chevy, and I’ll talk to you all on the 28th.
